Recent Junes in Ireland:
- 2016: Two-thirds of Long-Term Average (LTA) rainfall values were above average. All stations reported above average mean air temperatures and LTA sunshine values were variable.
- 2017: Changeable, unsettled and dull. The majority of stations reported above average monthly rainfall totals and above average mean Air temperatures, while two-thirds of available sunshine totals were below their LTA.
- 2018: Heatwave conditions experienced in many places. Air temperatures and sunshine values were above average everywhere while rainfall totals were below their LTA. Storm Hector passed by the Northwest on the 13th & 14th.
- 2019: Cool and unsettled overall with a warm finish. The majority of monthly rainfall totals were above average, mean air temperatures were below and sunshine values were variable.
- 2020: Changeable, dull and windy. The majority of monthly rainfall totals were above average. Temperatures were near average, while sunshine values were below average everywhere.
- 2021: Dry everywhere, sunny and warm in the South and East. Rainfall totals were below average everywhere. The majority of mean air temperatures were above average and nearly all sunshine totals were above average.
June 2022
Wetter, cooler and cloudier in the West. Drier, warmer and sunnier in the East
June was a relatively mild month with above average rainfall for many, especially in the West. The airflow was mostly between southerly and westerly, which brought numerous Atlantic weather fronts across the country at times, along with periods of strong convective shower activity. There was a lot of sunshine in the East and Southeast at times, while the West and Southwest had a duller month. Pressure remained relatively high for most of the first week and between the 12th and 23rd, which weakened the weather fronts and brought a lot of dry weather. The bulk of the month’s rainfall fell during two main periods. The first was between Tuesday 7th and Saturday 11th when two Atlantic low pressure systems passed close to the Northwest of Ireland, one containing the remnants of ex-tropical storm Alex. This brought widespread rain or showers and unseasonably windy conditions. The second saw a trough of low pressure sitting directly over Ireland and the UK for the final week of the month. This brought the wettest spell of the month with widespread heavy rain or showers on most days, along with further unseasonably windy conditions.
Rainfall: Above average in most places, highest in the West and Southwest. Below average in the East
The majority of monthly rainfall totals were above their Long-Term Average (LTA). Percentage of monthly rainfall values ranged from 65% (the month’s lowest monthly rainfall total of 43.6 mm) at Dublin Airport, Co Dublin to 165 % (the month’s highest monthly rainfall total of 148.0 mm) at Newport, Co Mayo. The highest daily rainfall total was 41.6 mm at Valentia Observatory, Co Kerry on Friday 24th (its highest daily fall for June since 2007). The number of rain days ranged from 12 days at a few stations to 23 days at Belmullet, Co Mayo. The number of wet days ranged from 9 days at Sherkin Island, Co Cork to 18 days at Belmullet, Co Mayo. The number of very wet days ranged from zero days at both Phoenix Park, Co Dublin and Dublin Airport, Co Dublin to 6 days at Newport, Co Mayo. Valentia Observatory, Co Kerry had its wettest June since 2007 with 146 mm (153% of its LTA). Belmullet, Co Mayo with 100.9 mm (140% of its LTA) and Knock Airport, Co Mayo with 129 mm (141% of its LTA), both had their wettest June since 2012.
Temperature: Mostly above average, below average at some stations in the West
The majority of mean air temperatures across the country, away from the West, were above their 1981-2010 Long-Term Average (LTA) for the month. Deviations from mean air temperature ranged from -0.3 °C (14.2 °C mean temperature) at Shannon Airport, Co Clare to 0.9 °C (14.4 °C the month’s highest mean temperature) at Phoenix Park, Co Dublin. Mean temperatures for the month were lowest at Knock Airport, Co Mayo with 12.3 °C (0.1 °C above its LTA). The month’s lowest temperatures were recorded on Thursday 2nd with the lowest air minimum reported at Mount Dillon, Co Roscommon, with a temperature of 2.1 °C and the lowest grass minimum reported at Dublin Airport Co Dublin with -2.1 °C. The highest maximum was reported on Thursday 16th at Phoenix Park, Co Dublin with a temperature of 23.9 °C. There was no air frost reported this month. Less than half of stations reported ground frost. The number of days with ground frost ranged from zero days at a few stations to 3 days at Dublin Airport, Co Dublin.
Sunshine: Highest in the Southeast, lowest in the Southwest
Percentage of Long-Term Average (LTA) sunshine values were variable (where available) across the country. Percentage of monthly sunshine values ranged from 82% (monthly sunshine total of 128.4 hours) at Shannon Airport, Co Clare to 104% (monthly sunshine total of 166.4 hours) at Casement Aerodrome, Co Dublin. Monthly sunshine totals ranged from 110.0 hours (No LTA comparison*) at Valentia Observatory, Co Kerry to 199.4 hours (No LTA comparison*) at Johnstown Castle, Co Wexford. The highest number of daily sunshine hours recorded this month was 16.1 hours at Malin Head, Co Donegal on Saturday 4th. The number of dull days ranged from 3 days at both Casement Aerodrome, Co Dublin and Cork Airport, Co Cork to 7 days at Shannon Airport, Co Clare.
Wind: Gales reported
Monthly mean wind speeds ranged from 5.8 knots (10.7 km/h) at Moore Park, Co Cork and Ballyhaise, Co Cavan to 15.0 knots (27.8 km/h) at Mace Head, Co Galway. Gales were reported at Belmullet, Co Mayo on Friday 10th and at Mace Head, Co Galway on Saturday 25th. The number of days with gale force winds ranged from zero at most stations to 1 day at both Mace Head, Co Galway and Belmullet, Co Mayo. There were no strong gales or storms reported this month. The month’s highest 10-minute mean wind speed was reported at both Mace Head, Co Galway and Belmullet, Co Mayo on Saturday 25th and Friday 10th, respectively with 34 knots (63 km/h). The month’s highest gust was 45 knots (83 km/h) reported at Belmullet, Co Mayo on Friday 10th.
