A mix of sunny spells and scattered blustery showers this afternoon. A few may be heavy, but the showers will die out by evening and cloud will increase. Fresh and gusty westerly winds, stronger near coasts, will gradually ease and back southerly. Afternoon highs of 6 to 8 Celsius.

TONIGHT

Tonight strengthening southeasterly winds associated with Storm Eowyn will bring heavy, persistent and widespread rain, turning to sleet and snow for a time. Through the night winds will continue to strengthen to gale force over land as they veer southwesterly by morning. Impacts will be severe with power outages and significant disruption due to falling trees and structural damage. Wave overtopping near windward coasts can be expected also. Cold initially with lows of zero to 4 Celsius but temperatures will rise through the night, reaching 10 to 12 Celsius for time.

TOMORROW - Friday 24th January

Tomorrow, Friday, gale force southwest winds over land, will veer westerly during the morning and reach violent storm force at times along the coast. Rain, persistent at times, will give way to scattered squally showers by midday. Afternoon temperatures of 6 to 9 Celsius but feeling much colder due to wind-chill. The winds will steadily ease through the afternoon.

National Outlook

Winds will continue to ease and will become light to moderate Friday night. A cold night with clear spells and scattered showers, some of sleet and snow. Lowest temperatures of zero to plus 2 degrees with some frost possible towards dawn on Saturday.

A cold and frosty start on Saturday with sunny spells and isolated showers, showers will become widespread and frequent during the afternoon, some of sleet and snow. Highest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees in moderate to fresh southwest winds.

Cold and frosty on Saturday night with lowest temperatures of minus 2 to plus 2 degrees.

Sunday will be wet and windy as rain spreading northeastwards over the country turns heavy and persistent, clearing to showers later. Highest temperatures 6 to 9 degrees in strong and gusty south to southeast winds with gales at the coast.

On Monday showers of sleet and snow will be widespread and it will feel very cold as a strong southerly wind becomes fresh to strong southwest. Afternoon temperatures 7 to 9 degrees.

The further outlook to the middle of next week is for showers at times with mainly westerly winds and temperatures around normal for the time of year.
